Yet better plans don’t always lead to better outcomes. Planners now have access to advanced tools, deeper data, and increasingly precise ways to model a client’s financial life. Plans can evaluate multiple scenarios and map long-term outcomes with a high degree of confidence.

Despite that progress, one challenge remains: strong plans do not always lead to strong outcomes. The issue isn’t a lack of insight. It’s that insight alone doesn’t ensure clients will act.

This is where decision design changes the conversation. Decision design is the practice of structuring choices so they’re easier for clients to understand, prioritize, and act on. It shifts the focus from producing better analysis to enabling better decisions.

The Gap Between Insight and Action

Financial planners routinely deliver well-constructed plans aligned to client goals. From a technical perspective, these plans are sound.

Helping clients act consistently is often where advisors create the greatest long-term value. Yet follow-through remains uneven. Clients agree with recommendations in meetings but delay acting, implement only portions of the plan, or revert to prior habits over time. Industry commentary reflects how familiar this pattern is, with financial professionals noting that even recommendations that resonate in the moment often fail to translate into sustained action.¹

This gap persists in part because of a long-standing assumption: stronger analysis leads to better outcomes. If clients have more accurate information and clearer projections, they should make better decisions.

In practice, outcomes depend less on the plan itself and more on whether decisions are made and sustained. A technically sound strategy that is not implemented cannot deliver results.

The challenge is not improving the plan. It is improving how decisions happen within the planning process.

Why Insight Alone Doesn’t Change Behavior

Financial planners frequently see alignment during meetings followed by inaction afterward. This reflects how decisions are made outside structured conversations, where competing priorities and cognitive load come into play.

Consider a common client scenario. You walk a client through a comprehensive retirement analysis and recommend increasing savings, adjusting investments, and delaying retirement by two years. The client agrees. But after the meeting, no changes are made.

Nothing about the recommendation was unclear. The analysis was sound. Individually, each recommendation makes sense, but together, they can feel overwhelming, and the client was left to translate a multi-part strategy into concrete steps. Faced with multiple decisions at once, the easier path was to delay action.

This is where most plans break down. Industry perspectives consistently highlight that behavior—not knowledge—is the limiting factor. As one perspective puts it, “the plan itself isn’t the issue… the problem is behavior.”²

More information and options have created richer planning experiences, but also more complexity. When clients face too many viable paths or too much detail, determining what to do becomes harder. The “paradox of choice” applies to planners as well, leading to delayed decisions and inertia.³

At the same time, clients can become overwhelmed by the volume of information they are asked to process —especially when their planner struggles to translate analysis into clear outcomes.⁴

The result is a persistent implementation gap. Clients may understand the plan but still fail to act.

What Decision Design Looks Like in Practice

Decision design focuses on how choices are structured, not just what choices are presented.

In financial planning, this means helping clients engage with decisions in a way that feels manageable. Instead of presenting a fully optimized outcome, planners guide clients through tradeoffs, sequence decisions over time, and break strategies into smaller steps.

Technology can support this when applied intentionally. It can organize information, surface what matters most, and enable scenario comparisons. The goal is not to simplify the plan itself, but to make decisions within the plan easier to act on.

Where Traditional Planning Breaks Down

Many follow-through challenges stem from how planning is structured.

Clients are often presented with too much information at once, obscuring what matters most. Plans also tend to lack prioritization, leaving clients without a clear starting point.

Another gap is the translation from explanation to action. Plans explain what is happening, but not always what to do next.

These issues increase friction. When decisions feel complex, clients defer them. As many planners observe, the greatest risk is often not poor decisions, but inaction itself.

The constraint is not capability. It is that the experience is not designed around how decisions are actually made.

Principles of Better Decision Design

Improving outcomes requires a more deliberate approach.

Reducing cognitive load helps clients focus and act. Sequencing decisions over time creates a clearer path forward. The difference becomes clear when we revisit the earlier scenario.

Instead of presenting all recommendations at once, you focus first on increasing savings by a specific amount next month. The impact is clear, and the client implements the change immediately.

At the next review, you introduce portfolio adjustments. The retirement timing decision comes later, once progress is visible.

The strategy has not changed. The analysis is the same. What has changed is how decisions are structured—one at a time, with clear actions attached. As a result, the client progresses instead of stalling.

Making tradeoffs explicit builds confidence. A direct path to action reduces ambiguity.

Finally, aligning with human behavior improves understanding. Clients value financial planners who help guide decisions and keep progress on track.⁵

Together, these principles shift the role of technology from producing analysis to enabling action.

The Planner’s Evolving Role

As decision design becomes more central, the planner’s role expands.

The focus shifts from delivering plans to shaping how decisions are made—guiding tradeoffs, prioritizing actions, and structuring timing.

Industry perspectives reinforce this shift. Planners are valued not just for providing information, but for helping clients move from understanding to action.²

Technology supports this process, but cannot replace it. Clients still rely on planners for context and confidence when decisions carry uncertainty.

The value of the planner lies in making information usable.

Implications for the Future of Planning

Financial planning continues to move from static deliverables to ongoing decision support. The focus is shifting from outputs to experiences that guide clients through decisions over time.

Firms continue to invest in advice and technology, but many still struggle to translate those investments into sustained engagement and action.⁶

The next phase of planning will be defined less by how much analysis can be produced and more by how effectively it supports real-time decision-making.

Better financial outcomes don’t come from better analysis alone. They come from helping clients make—and act—on better decisions. That requires more than insight. It requires planning experiences designed around how clients think, prioritize, and act.

That is where decision design becomes essential.

Learn more about helping clients who struggle to act on financial planning recommendations in our eBook, Motivating Clients to Act.

Sources:

1 Michael Kitces, “Closing the Implementation Gap: A Formula for Better Client Follow-Through,” Kitces.com, April 22, 2026,
https://www.kitces.com/blog/financial-planning-psychology-client-communication-recommendation-advisor-evoke-exploration-meeting-george-kinder/.

2 Ryan Goulart, “How Behavioral Financial Advice Improves Client Follow-Through and Plan Success,” think2perform, 2026,
https://www.think2perform.com/how-behavioral-financial-advice-improves-client-follow-through-and-plan-success/.

3 Jason Diamond, “How the Paradox of Choice Traps Successful Advisors,” WealthManagement.com, June 25, 2026,
https://www.wealthmanagement.com/professional-development/how-the-paradox-of-choice-traps-successful-advisors.

4.
