It requires understanding how client needs evolve over time and designing the right teams, tools, processes, and capabilities to support that evolution at scale. That is why I think deeply about how to deliver comprehensive planning that is both specialized and personal.

In my experience, as clients’ financial lives become more complex, it becomes personal very quickly. My team focuses on comprehensive planning for clients across the wealth continuum, so I’m constantly meeting clients where they are and evolving with them as their lives and financial needs change. As planning becomes more specialized, the advisor’s role doesn’t become smaller. It becomes even more important as the person who brings all the pieces together into a coordinated and thoughtful client experience.

Demand for Comprehensive Financial Planning Is Growing

Financial planning is now a core service offered by many financial advisors, with firms expanding their planning capabilities to meet rising market demand. Research indicates that 54 percent of clients are expected to receive comprehensive, ongoing planning advice by 2027, up from 48 percent today.1

Anyone who serves a broad range of clients knows that planning can look very different depending on a client’s stage of life, family structure, balance sheet, business interests, career path, and long-term goals.

The wide range of needs is part of what makes planning so personal. Clients bring questions spanning family, retirement, investments, tax considerations, estate planning, business decisions, risk, opportunity, and legacy. To understand those questions well, planners and advisors should understand the person behind them, and typically, there is no easy way to do that. It’s strictly a human-to-human activity.

The opportunity is clear: bring the right specialties together, so advice stays coordinated, personal, and clear.

Making Increasingly Complex Financial Planning Repeatable

The objective is to bring the right professionals into the planning process early enough so that their knowledge can shape the recommendation, not just react to it. A shared process helps firms apply specialized knowledge at the right moments, making complex planning more repeatable without making it feel generic.

Clients are navigating broader and more nuanced planning needs than they may have in the past, and those needs are increasingly interconnected.

A tax decision can affect an investment strategy

A business transition can reshape retirement planning

An estate plan can influence future family decisions

An equity compensation decision can create tax, liquidity, and broader planning considerations

As financial decisions become more intertwined, the planner’s role becomes even more important. Clients still look to a trusted advisor to understand their goals, connect the dots, and guide decisions. But that relationship needs coordinated support, including:

Strategic specialization

Shared client context

Consistent planning processes

Clear implementation pathways

Technology that keeps planning visible and coordinated

The goal is to build a planning environment where people, processes, and technology work together so clients receive advice that is both sophisticated and personal.

Coordinated Specialization Is a Significant Opportunity in Planning

As practices and firms grow, specialization can become a powerful way to deliver more comprehensive advice. A planning team may include professionals who focus on areas such as executive compensation, business-owner planning, estate planning, or other advanced planning disciplines. Investment research teams may bring deeper insights into portfolio construction and markets. Tax professionals may add another layer of insight.

This does not diminish the role of the planner. It should strengthen it. As the lead, you remain the trusted relationship. The planning team, specialists, and firm infrastructure help support that relationship with depth, consistency, and a broader perspective.

Industry research supports this trend: team-based advisory practices have higher average AUM and stronger annual organic growth than solo practices.2 Obviously, other factors such as client type can impact AUM, so this doesn’t mean every practice needs to be team-based. However, it does suggest that more clients are receiving holistic planning through coordinated teams.

The takeaway is that as client needs become more complex, many firms are finding value in bringing specialized professionals together in a more coordinated way.

Specialization Should Create Clarity, Not Fragmentation

Specialization creates value when it makes the client experience more coordinated, clearer, and more personal. Without coordination, clients may feel as if they are being handed from one department to another.

That distinction matters because specialization should not create more complexity for the client to manage. The goal is not to create silos of knowledge but rather to design a planning model where specialists can contribute depth while staying connected to the client’s broader financial life.

For planning leaders, that takes intentional design, including a few key steps:

Identify where team members have interest and aptitude.

Align those strengths with recurring client needs.

Turn individual knowledge into a shared planning capability.

Make specialization part of how the organization consistently serves clients, not something isolated with one person.

This includes creating opportunities for planners to deepen niche areas of specialization such as equity compensation, business-owner planning, estate planning, or other specialized disciplines.

Short Exercise: Locating Specialization

This can help you identify where specialization may already exist, where it needs to be reflected in the client experience, and how to make that knowledge easier to apply consistently.

Identify one area of specialization. Choose one planning need that frequently arises in your client base, such as equity compensation, tax planning, business-owner planning, or estate planning.

Then reflect on these three questions:

Who on the team has the strongest knowledge in this area?

Where does that specialized skill or insight need to enter the client experience?

What process, tool, or handoff would make those insights easier for advisors and clients to access?

Standardize Planning Without Losing Personalization

As planning organizations scale, the next tension appears: how do we create consistency without creating a one-size-fits-all, cookie-cutter experience?

Firms can address this by separating what needs to be consistent from what should be adapted to the client. For example, here’s one approach:

Set enterprise guardrails for planning assumptions, methodologies, rates of return, and other foundational inputs

Use those standards to create confidence that advice is grounded in a shared planning framework

Adapt the delivery to how each client makes decisions, such as whether they need a detailed report or a focused conversation

Give advisors the flexibility to tell each client’s story in a way that feels relevant, personal, and clear

My firm operates with enterprise guardrails and consistent assumptions, while still allowing our planners and advisors to customize how they tell each client’s story. This helps create one of the most important operating principles for our firms: maintain a consistent standard while personalizing the client experience.

Technology Should Support Better Human Conversations

Technology can support modern planning by making advice more connected, consistent, and actionable. At the highest level, technology can bring the plan, the conversation, and the client experience closer together, helping financial professionals turn complex financial decisions into clearer next steps. This helps create a more personalized client experience that remains consistent over time.

Here are a few ways using technology can help support clients across your team:

Make clients more confident with visual support: Show clients different modeling scenarios, compare options, and demonstrate how decisions may affect future outcomes.

Create consistency across planner, team, and client views: A shared digital experience can help keep the plan, presentation, and client portal connected.

Personalize plan delivery: Many professionals can work seamlessly together to tailor presentations around each client’s goals, life stage, and planning priorities.

Improve workflow efficiency: Technology can reduce manual steps, make it easier to move from planning discussion to client sharing, and help keep next steps visible.

Deepen client engagement: When clients can see trade-offs more clearly, they may ask better questions, build confidence, and stay more connected to the plan over time.

The point is not technology for its own sake. The strongest planning technology should make advice easier to explain, easier to personalize, and easier for clients to act on. Used well, it strengthens human conversation by helping advisors connect the technical details of a plan to the real-life decisions clients are trying to make.

The Human Side Still Leads

As planning becomes more specialized, firms should be careful not to lose the human connection that makes advice meaningful in the first place. Clients still want to feel known. They still want to understand how recommendations connect to their lives. They still need confidence that everyone involved shares an understanding of their goals, concerns, family dynamics, and priorities.

That is why the future of planning depends on effective coordination of knowledge around the client.

Short Exercise: Deploying Specialization

Firms that succeed will likely have clear answers to four questions:

Where should specialization be strengthened in my practice or organization?

Where should the process become more consistent?

Where should the client experience remain most personalized?

How do I build a client experience around these answers?

These questions sit at the center of modern wealth planning. Reflecting on these questions can translate into great conversations with colleagues and clients.

Building the Next Financial Planning Model

The planning profession is evolving because client needs continue to change, and that evolution requires strengthening client relationships with the right professionals, processes, and tools behind it.

As complexity increases, firms will need to think more intentionally about how they deliver planning. That is the opportunity ahead: to scale specialized insight without losing humanity, and to build planning systems that support, rather than dilute, personal advice.

To learn more about scaling financial planning across your practice or enterprise, read 6 Ways to Scale Financial Planning for Greater Client Impact.

1 Cerulli Associates, “According to Financial Advisors, 54% of Investors Will Receive Financial Planning by 2027,” 2026.

2 Cerulli Associates, “Team-Based Advisor Practices Outperform Solo Practices in Growth and Service Offerings,” 2025.

DISCLAIMER: The Heart of Advice Blog is meant as an educational and informative resource for financial professionals and individuals alike.
