Specialized knowledge isn’t always scarce; access to that expertise, however, can be.<\/p>\n

This distinction is maybe easiest to see in healthcare. Medical knowledge, specialist insight, and diagnostic tools may be widely available, but they don’t automatically reach everyone who could benefit from them. The real challenge is not proving the value of expertise. It is in delivering specialized knowledge consistently, affordably, in tandem with technology <\/span>and at scale<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Financial planning faces a similar access challenge. The goal is not simply to create more plans, but to make planning easier to deliver to those who can benefit from it. <\/span>That matters because clients rarely experience their financial lives in separate pieces. Retirement, taxes, cash flow, estate considerations, insurance, and family goals often overlap.<\/p>\n

As financial planning evolves beyond its traditional focus on wealth management for high-net-worth households, a broader range of families seek guidance on taxes, retirement, protection planning, and long-term goals, creating demand for advice that extends well beyond investment recommendations. According to one study, just 25 percent of advisors practices met the research’s standard for comprehensive planning<\/strong>.1<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n

Financial planning may be approaching an inflection point. Advances in AI and planning technology are creating new opportunities to extend advisor capacity, while reinforcing the importance of human skills that help clients navigate complex decisions. At the same time, larger firms are increasingly looking to planning as a way to deepen relationships and support growth.<\/p>\n

And yet, planning still does not reach everyone it should.<\/p>\n

Expanding Access to Planning Without Sacrificing Insights<\/h2>\n

Planning takes time, data, coordination, and follow-through, all while professionals manage competing demands<\/a>. The challenge is finding way to extend high-quality guidance to more clients without sacrificing consistency or depth.<\/p>\n

Many conversations about technology start with the question of whether it can make non-experts perform like experts. In financial planning, I believe that\u2019s the wrong question. A better question is whether more people can benefit from the outcomes of existing expertise<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That’s an important distinction. What if the goal <\/span>was to make the benefits of expertise available to more people? Expanding access doesn’t mean lowering the standard:<\/span><\/p>\n
