I learned it meeting by meeting, in the moments when a client came in with questions they could not answer on their own and left with a clearer view of what was actually possible. That’s the planning moment I love.

It is not the chart, the tax discussion, or even the recommendation itself. It’s the moment near the end of the client meeting when someone who came in carrying a dozen different worries looks at the plan, takes a breath, and realizes, “I think we’re going to be okay.”

That transformation is what drives me. Clients show up worried about market volatility, inflation, retirement, Social Security, healthcare costs, politics, and whether they’re making the right financial decisions. They may carry these concerns for months, sometimes years, allowing uncertainty to spill into their daily lives. Then we sit down together and start working through the plan.

An hour later, the economy hasn’t changed. Interest rates haven’t changed. The market hasn’t changed. The headlines haven’t changed.

What has changed is the client’s understanding of their own situation. They’ve seen their numbers, tested their assumptions, and explored different outcomes. They can finally separate what they know from what they’re worried about.

That’s where confidence comes from. Not certainty, even when the probabilities improve, but enough clarity to move forward despite uncertainty. Client confidence is built from a combination of informational clarity and trust.

Research Shows a Connection Between Planning and Confidence

I see that connection between planning and confidence showing up in the research, too. One study found that 94 percent of households advised by CFP® professionals feel confident in their ability to achieve their financial goals, compared with 81 percent of unadvised Americans.1

The point is not that planning removes uncertainty. It’s that a good planning process can help people feel more prepared to make decisions in the middle of it.

Start Building Client Confidence Before the Review Meeting

One of the biggest missed opportunities I see in planning is waiting until a meeting to engage clients. I want clients involved and to feel supported before they walk through the door or hop on a video call.

How do I accomplish this? I make sure reports are available ahead of time, client documents are uploaded, accounts are linked, and relevant information is reviewed. Here’s a quick checklist of key things I do prior to a meeting to build confidence:

Send a short, goal-driven agenda in advance. Use a planning platform or CRM to frame the meeting around the client’s priorities, open decisions, and the one or two outcomes that matter most.

Prompt clients to update the portal before the meeting. Ask clients to confirm household information, beneficiary details, outside accounts, insurance coverage, income changes, expenses, and major life updates.

Review prior meeting notes and open tasks in the portal. A repeatable pre-meeting workflow helps ensure follow-ups do not get lost, especially when multiple team members support the relationship.

Prepare simple visuals. Use a basic client portal view, data visualizations, dashboards, plan snapshots, probability ranges, cash-flow views, or scenario comparisons to make abstract planning issues concrete.

Use technology deliberately. Review outputs, protect client data, and make sure the tool supports the client‘s best interest rather than simply making preparation faster.

Often, one of my clients may log in beforehand, notice something is missing or outdated, and update it themselves. Without realizing it, they’re becoming active participants in their planning process.

Set the Stage for a Great Client Meeting

If you’ve asked clients to take action before the meeting, they arrive already participating in the planning process. When they walk into the conference room, consider starting with a visual representation of their financial life. Make sure their home is there. Their accounts are there. Their investments are there. Their insurance information is there, ready to be worked on. Everything is connected in a single place, as if to say to them, “We’ve got this!” before they have even sat down.

Developing Financial Confidence Through Data, Not Reassurance

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that reassurance has a short shelf life. If a client says they’re worried about the market, telling them not to worry doesn’t actually solve anything. They’ll feel better for a few minutes, and then the next headline appears, and we’re right back where we started.

Instead, I go back to the data, 100 percent of the time.

For example, if a client is worried about Social Security disappearing, we remove Social Security from the plan and see what happens. If a client is worried about market returns, we lower the assumptions and rerun the projections. If retirement feels too aggressive, we test a later retirement date and compare the outcomes. This process is simple, but it works because it’s fact-based. “If Y happens, here’s what the plan shows us about X.”

Here are four steps that outline how I build confidence by showing clients the data:

We continuously revisit assumptions.

We agree on the variables, even trying “worst-case scenarios.”

We model the specific scenario in the portal.

Then we look at the results together.

I never pretend to know exactly what will happen over the next twenty or fifty years—no planner or advisor does. What I can do is help clients understand the range of potential outcomes and see how different decisions affect the plan. The moment people can see those outcomes for themselves, I see confidence start to replace fear.

The Most Important Financial Planning Question I Ask Every Client

I prepare extensively for every review meeting, but preparation only works if it leaves room for the client’s real priorities to surface. That’s why I start all my client meetings with the same question:

“What matters most to you today?”

You can guess what happens next. I came into the meeting prepared. Then the client answers that first question, and half the time it reminds me that my agenda is not the point. The client almost never asks, “Can we spend more time on portfolio performance?”

More often, it is something happening in real life: a family decision, a retirement question, a wedding, an aging parent, a special-needs grandchild, a charitable goal, or some other issue that has become impossible to leave outside the room. That is usually where the real conversation starts. The money matters, of course, but mostly because it must support the people and priorities clients care about most.

Build Confidence Through Discipline, Not Prediction

Building client confidence doesn’t happen in one or two meetings. It takes time. In my experience, one of the hardest lessons is that confidence comes from understanding why we’re making a decision, what we’re trying to solve for, and what we’ll do next. If you only look and talk about the numbers, you’re missing the point, and the client will feel it.

I see this most clearly with concentrated stock positions. The conversation can turn into a guessing game very quickly. Should we sell today? Wait until next week? Hold another month? What if the stock keeps climbing? What if we sell and immediately regret it?

The problem is that markets are very good at making yesterday look obvious. So, I try to move the conversation away from prediction and back to discipline.

If the goal is to reduce risk, we will build a strategy for reducing risk. Maybe that means selling in stages. Maybe it means setting price points or dates in advance. Maybe it means agreeing on how much exposure still feels appropriate. The exact strategy depends on the client, the situation, the timing, but the discipline matters. Once we have a thoughtful plan, we follow it. We are not trying to win every market move; we are trying to avoid letting every market move make the decision for us.

Over time, the planners and clients who seem most confident are not the ones pretending they can see around the corner. They are the ones who understand the trade-offs, trust the assumptions behind the plan, and know what they will do if conditions change. That is the kind of confidence good planning should create. Because although the future is never certain, you can make it manageable and approach it with confidence.

Learn more about building your confidence as a financial professional in our blog post Gaining Confidence as a Financial Advisor.

1 CFP® Professional-Advised Americans Experience Greater Financial Preparedness, CFP Board, January 2026.

DISCLAIMER: The Heart of Advice Blog is meant as an educational and informative resource for financial professionals and individuals alike.
